What haze may do to your hair
Research on air pollution and hair is still limited, so it is not fair to say haze directly causes hair loss. Fine particles in the air can settle on your hair and scalp, though, and together with sweat in Penang's warm, humid weather, your scalp may feel itchy, sticky or not quite clean.
Simple habits when you go out and come home
Check the official Air Pollutant Index (API) and follow health advice from the authorities, and spend less time outdoors on bad air days. If you need to go out, a cap or headscarf can keep your hair covered. When you get home, wash with a gentle shampoo, dry your scalp fully, and try not to scratch hard with your nails if it feels itchy.
Shedding after being unwell
If you develop a cough, fever or feel unwell during the haze, rest and see a doctor first. A high fever or a more serious illness can trigger a bout of temporary shedding two to three months later, and this kind of shedding usually settles over time.
When to get it checked
If shedding suddenly increases, comes out in patches, or your scalp is red, swollen or painful, see a doctor or dermatologist. If your hairline, crown or parting has been thinning slowly over years, that is usually not caused by the haze; book a free consultation and scalp scan at Folli-Doc Penang to see whether Simulation & Stimulation suits you. Results vary from person to person.
